Clean, modern, textural, artful — desert contemporary can be interpreted in different ways. This Scottsdale retreat for a Minnesota family was updated from 1999 contemporary, into a warm and more elegant version of itself through an extensive renovation. With awareness of the colorful and vibrant sweeping views of the golf course at Ancala Country Club, a neutral and timeless palette of taupes, ivories, and greys were chosen to complement and not compete with the colorful setting. In an earthy contrast to the vertical lines of the custom cabinetry, the grain of the rift cut ash floors flows diagonally through the kitchen and living spaces. Asymmetrical linear reveals on the kitchen hood are repeated under the walnut eating counter. Textured materials, and a curved built-in console add visual interest to this family room, and dramatic light fixtures paired with large scaled art were important tools to add the touch of ‘desert glam’ style requested by the homeowners.
